Psalm 139:5-6, NKJV
O Lord, You have searched me and known me. 2 You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. 3 You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. 4 For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether. 5 You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it. We live at the top of a hill in a rural setting which means the front of our house is very exposed to the elements. When we first moved some 20 years ago there were huge conifers in the front garden that not only were too tall to shield us from the wind but also cast vast shadows all day long and made the inside of the house very dark. We took them down and replaced them with hedging. Hedging works better in our environment because the shrubs don’t work against the wind they redirect and filter it. Some of the gusts are sent vertically, and some pass over the top of the hedge or travel through the branches. Their speed and power are slowed and reduced in the process. When the bible talks about a hedge it usually means a level of protection God provides. He hedged David in on every side so nothing could come to David unless it first passed through his permission. What was true for David is true for all of us who trust in Jesus. Right now, in this moment, the Lord hasn’t just hedged you in but also has his hand on you. His hedge and hand are evidence of his constant, unyielding, and tender care. Whatever comes against you, you can be confident God your Father is intervening to redirect, slow and reduce the impact on you. We may not understand everything the Father does, but we can revel today in the truth that his protection surrounds us like a shield and his hand is on us. Always. Let's pray Lord, I am grateful. Grateful that you are as close to me as the shadow of my right hand, that you know me and love me, care for me and protect me. Thank you for this wonderful truth. In Jesus' name. Amen.
