God frequently works through the ordinary. Through them he shares something of his love for us and reveals elements of his redemption plan. In this devotional series we look at some of the ordinary things Jesus would have encountered as he journeyed towards the cross. For the next few days we're looking at garments. Holy Spirit, will you reveal something extraordinary through each of them. Amen. “Do not come any closer,” the LORD warned. “Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground. Exodus 3:5, NLT Not surprisingly many of the gospel accounts reference the sandals Jesus wore. With no common means of transport people walked everywhere, and often for days, so sandals were essential for living. But it was customary to take sandals off in certain places and at certain times. Taking off one's shoes was and still is a sign of reverence and respect. Moses does this at the burning bush and his deliberate act of humility and obedience lead directly to God sharing his plans with him.
The instruction from the Father to Moses reminds us he intends there should be no barriers between us and him and the tearing of the veil in the temple tells us Jesus has made a way for us always to be welcomed into the holiest of spaces. We can stand before the Father, revel in his presence. Can you feel the ground tremble through the soles of your feet as you approach him? He is excited to spend time with you today. Let's pray Lord, I am taking my shoes off and humbling myself again in your presence. Thank you for welcoming me with open arms. I want to hear your instructions for today, Lord. Open my ears and my heart to your voice. In Jesus' name. Amen.
