God frequently works through the ordinary. Through them he shares something of his love for us and reveals elements of his redemption plan. In this devotional series we look at some of the ordinary things Jesus would have encountered as he journeyed towards the cross. Today we look at the garments. Holy Spirit, will you reveal something extraordinary through each of them. Amen. Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him. Matthew 27:27-31, NIV The robe the soldiers put on Jesus was meant to humiliate him but instead it declared to the heavens that this man was not just a king, but THE King. Not just a priest, but THE High Priest. Mark and John say the robe was purple which reminds us of the wide curtain at the ancient Tabernacle - blue at one end, red at the other and merged as purple in the centre. Likewise the curtain at the Temple that tore from top to bottom as Jesus died was coloured the same way.
It is often these tiny seemingly insignificant details that help build my faith. The trouble the Father goes to as he weaves the Old and New Testaments together, repeatedly points to his Son, and reinforces his redemption plan reminds me this is Truth. It is said that the devil is in the detail but he is not! No-one could imagine such a fantastically intricate story. No-one could plan everything so comprehensively. None that is, but God! So, today, celebrate. You know the truth, it has set you free, and will continually set you free. The Lord is in the detail! Let's pray Thank you Father, that are you with me in every aspect of my life. Thank you for the way you have woven so many incredible threads throughout the Bible all of which come together in the person of Jesus. Continue to amaze me with seemingly insignificant details in your Word that amount to the spectacular truth I am loved by THE King. In Jesus' name. Amen.
