God frequently works through the ordinary. Through them he shares something of his love for us and reveals elements of his redemption plan. In this devotional series we look at some of the ordinary things Jesus would have encountered as he journeyed towards the cross. Today is the last day of the 'watery' devotions. Holy Spirit, will you reveal something extraordinary today. Amen. Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptised by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfil all righteousness.” Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:13-17, NIV There are stories and images of water throughout the Scriptures. Water can symbolise chaos, destruction, rebirth, or new life.
In the Gospels, the water stories help us understand who Jesus is. We see his divinity as he stills a tumultuous storm, walks on water, and turns water into wine. We also see his humanity in his need to take a drink at the well in Samaria, and his determination to be baptised at the start of his ministry. Through his baptism in the River Jordon, Jesus demonstrates he is willing to dive into the mess and confusion of human experience and bring stability to it by making it possible for everyone to receive God’s forgiveness and grace. Jesus’ invitation to you today is to trust him as he brings the chaos into order. Receive his forgiveness and grace, In you, he is well pleased. Let's pray Lord Jesus, flood every area of my life so I bring you glory. Thank you, Holy Spirit, for the transformational power that enables me to align everything I have control of to the Father’s will and purposes. Thank you that I can trust you to order those things I can't influence. Thank you for your love and affirmation. I receive them both today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
