God frequently works through the ordinary. Through them he shares something of his love for us and reveals elements of his redemption plan. In this devotional series we look at some of the ordinary things Jesus would have encountered as he journeyed towards the cross. We're looking at utensils - including containers! Holy Spirit, will you reveal something extraordinary through each of them. Amen. And He said to them, "When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters. Luke 22;10, NASB The disciples were anxious to find somewhere they could eat the Passover meal together and Jesus told them to look for a man carrying a pitcher. This would have been utterly unexpected at a time when drawing water was a woman’s job. Even a male slave wouldn’t have thought to do that! But in many ways, this is the beauty of the gospel. Nothing about it is expected.
We might think we have to work to earn our salvation - we don’t. We may imagine there is a hierarchy in the Kingdom - there isn’t. (Well, there sort of is but it’s upside down!). We might think we might have to make reparations for all the things we have got and continue to get wrong - that’s not necessary. God living as a human on Earth is about as likely as a man in the Ancient Middle East drawing water. Yet he does just that. And by his death and resurrection he utterly and unexpectedly redeems humankind and all of creation. Look for the unexpected today. Jesus has a habit of working in ways that break the mould. Let's pray I am pretty sure, Father, you broke the mould when you made me and for that I am thankful! I am made in your image, destined for glory, free to be me. Show me something more of who you are today, Lord. Break into my life in ways I can't possibly imagine. Amaze me with your goodness, God. In Jesus' name. Amen.
