When I was a child, I learned a song called "Were You There?" You can listen to it here: https://youtu.be/MI9V8owRTA4?feature=shared
What captivated me most about this song was its simplicity and the joy that filled the room as we reached the final verse. Recently, this song came back to me, and it seems especially fitting for the season of Lent. As we reflect on the events leading to the cross, we will meet the people who encountered Jesus along the way. Their stories will provide insights for our journey. But for today, we’ll pause and reflect on the song, rejoicing in the truth that one day we will see - face-to-face - the one whose sacrifice defeated sin and death for all eternity. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree? Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree? Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb? Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb? Were you there when He rose up from the grave? Were you there when He rose up from the grave? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when He rose up from the grave? First published in William Barton's Old Plantation Hymns (1899)
